Le Train Bleu, the “Secret” Train Restaurant in Bloomingdales, Closes

inside_1

Sadly, one of my favorite spots in the city closed on Wednesday.

lunch

Le Train Bleu was the not-so-secretsecret” restaurant in Bloomingdale’s.  It was designed to look like an old rail dining car and was named for the famous train of the same name (not the restaurant in the Gare de Lyon railway station in Paris).  In a lot of ways, it was one of those restaurants that time apparently forgot — the experience was probably the same a month ago as it was when it opened in 1979, and the same people likely still worked there.  About half of the patrons were tourists, but the regular clientele — now in their 70’s and 80’s — were probably the same too.  And the food was always good, though not spectacular.  Still, it was just one of those places that you love to be.

While it was only a block from my apartment, I didn’t go often because it was seemingly never open (it closed at 5:00 every day).  But it will nonetheless be greatly missed, and I’m glad I got one last lunch on its final day.  It was as good as it ever was until the end.

Carolina Reaper Madness: the Hottest Tortilla Chip in the World

Mashable brings word of “Carolina Reaper Madness,” purportedly the hottest tortilla chip ever made. So hot, in fact, that the $4.99 coffin-shaped box comes with one single chip. The chip is seasoned with the Carolina Reaper Pepper, the Guinness Book of World Records holder for Hottest Chili Pepper on Earth. Jeff Day, Brand Manager for Paqui Chips, says: “After you eat that one chip, trust me, you’re not looking to dig back into the bag and have a second one.”

Actually, nobody should want to eat even one of these things. Yet, I do.

It doesn’t look like they’re available yet, but when they are, you can get one here.

Aretsky’s Patroon is Celebrating its 20th Anniversary on September 23rd!

2

Aretsky’s Patroon is celebrating its 20th anniversary on September 23rd. At $500 per person, it’s pricey, but it’s for charity. And a Patroon is a wealthy landowner, so what did you expect? Ken Aretsky is a real guy, by the way, and he still owns the restaurant.

OK, so maybe most people can’t afford the steep price tag. We can’t. But if we could, the five course dinner sounds pretty darned good. Chefs Michael Lomonaco (Porter House New York, and formerly Windows on the World), Rebecca Charles (Pearl Oyster Bar), Geoffrey Zakarian (TV, and a bunch of great restaurants), Tom Valenti (Ouest), and Patroon’s own Executive Chef Aaron Fitterman will each prepare a different course. And the entire event will benefit God’s Love We Deliver, which is “the New York City metropolitan area’s leading provider of nutritious, individually-tailored meals to people who are too sick to shop or cook for themselves.” The evening will also include live music, cigars and Scotch on the Patroon rooftop. Who doesn’t like music, Scotch, and rooftops?

If you can do it, tickets are available here. If you can’t, you can still make a donation here.

Drexler’s Launches Weekend Brunch

Mediterranean Bloody Mary

In August, Darin Rubell replaced his swanky East Village lounge Ella with Drexler’s, a neighborhood cocktail and charcuterie bar. Now, Drexler’s is launching its own version of “Louisiana-style” brunch. Every Saturday and Sunday beginning March 26th, Black Seed Bagels with cream cheese will be served with Catsmo lox on Drexel’s signature shareable butcher blocks. In a nod to the bar’s “Bayou inspiration,” there will also be gumbo from Louisiana transplants The Gumbo Bros.

As for drinks, Beverage Director Dustin Olsen is introducing a Mediterranean Bloody Mary garnished with coppa calabrese, mozzarella, and cherry tomato. There will also be a new daytime specific cocktail menu with a traditional Bloody Mary, classic Mimosa, and a “Beermosa” made with Pilsner from Brooklyn-based Kelso Brewery. As if all that wasn’t enough, Drexler’s will also hosting live music, with bands such as Sweet Megg & The Wayfarers performing two sets from 2:00 to 5:00.

Drexler’s is from the same team as Boulton & Watt, Forrest Point, and 983 – Bushwick’s Living Room. [9 Avenue A, New York, NY 10009; 646-524-5226]
