Red Hook Dive Bar Sunny's Fights to Hang On

In a vanishing New York where not many dive bars are left, it’s good to see that Sunny’s in Red Hook is still hanging on…even if barely so. The bar flooded when Sandy hit and according to Eater, it has taken more than $100,000 to get it back up and in working order. Since then, the 18 cousins who co-own the bar have been pushing to sell. Tone Balzano Johansen, the wife of the bar’s namesake, Sunny Balzano, has been pushing back on the cousins and his opening down the road to turn the bar into a coffee shop and bring in live music and kegs to help make ends meet.
